Spelling Program for Term 1 – Working document

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely and enjoyable long weekend. On Friday staff attended a Professional Development lead by Glen Pearsall, a focus being in Engaging Instructional Practice. It was an insightful day and I came away with new tools and ideas to implement in the classroom. One of which has been the value of feedback and students owning their learning. I do aim to provide FAST, FREQUENT and FORMATIVE assessment/feedback, this is driven from the research undertaken from Dylan William.

The attached SPELLING program for Term 1 is a working document. It will be reflected on and owned by all Room 18 members. Students have worked alongside myself today to build and make understanding of the program. There are differentiated programs throughout the class.

The value system is implemented to ensure students are accountable and are stimulated to have success. It is expected students strive to achieve maximum points for each section. In self-reflection and feedback time students will be directed accordingly. Students are aware of what is expected of them for each task. This is positive as when student and teacher are reflecting and providing feedback the student has a good understanding of the criteria and the feedback is meaningful which will have high effectiveness for the student to follow up on.

The program (see below) has been included in this post along with this weeks list words (see bellow) from Jolly Grammar 3 as well as the challenging words from The Complete Phonic Handbook. Your child completed a pre-test today, they also self corrected their words. Incorrect words have become their learning words. Students will have 10-14 list words to learn. Students have built their list words to learn from the additional group provided from the Phonics Handbook.

Recap from Acquaintance Night

Good morning everyone,

Here are a few key pieces of information from Acquaintance Night.

1- Homework- Is flexible, allow your child to enjoy their afternoon activities and re-energise. It is expected around 20 minutes which will include learning words and reading aloud with discussion will be completed from Monday-Thursday night.
2- Appointments- If you wish to have a discussion with me about your child please send me an email so we can make an appointment to meet.
3- Camp- Is in Week 8 and selected parents who have a DCSI clearance will be notified in due course.
4- Morning Fitness- Every Thursday morning at 9am students participate in a 30-35 minute run or walk around the school. You are more than welcome to join us in this activity.
5- Diary- This should be filled in daily at school and viewed nightly. The diary will need to be signed on Thursday night for me to check on Friday morning every week.
6- Absence- Please notify the school or email me when your child is away so the documentation is up to date and correct, it will also save time in sending notes etc.
7- Premier’s Reading Challenge- Students are underway in this. They are looking for specific books in their library time and have their sheets printed and ready for them to fill in.

I believe that is all for now. Thank you for a great start to the term. Enjoy the long weekend.

Cheers,
Katina

SRC speeches

Hi everyone,

I have asked students to have a think and a go in writing a speech tonight. We only have 3 participants so far and do need more. Please have a chat with your child tonight, it would be great if they are interested to have a speech written up tonight for me to read out tomorrow morning.

Thanks everyone,

Katina

My at home reading log-1ydbe0k

Eight areas that conversations can start to ensure reading for meaning-19rjk07

Good afternoon everyone,

I have attached two documents (please see above) which your child should have glued in at the back of their homework book.

1. My at home reading log.

2. Eight areas that conversations can start to ensure reading for meaning.

Your child will receive a leveled reader tomorrow, I now have the levels of each student. I will discuss with them their level. It is expected that the student will write on their reading log their leveled reader details as asked. This is for two reasons; 1- To monitor what reading is completed at night, 2- Who has borrowed the reader out.

It is really important to have those discussions with your child prior, during and after the book to build their comprehension.

Enjoy the reading out aloud all!

Cheers, Katina.

Acquaintance Night Reminder

Good afternoon everyone,

A quick reminder to meet in Upper Mortlock for a 6pm start. It is preferred only parents and caregivers attend, if you do need to bring your child along they are most welcome.

See you tonight for a chat and an insight into the year ahead, it is planned to conclude around 6:40 pm.

Kind regards, Katina.

Hello and welcome to 2018

Welcome to room 18. I look forward to working with your children as a team to further build on their education.

It has been wonderful getting to know the children over the last few weeks and finding out more about who they are. It has been great to see children getting to know each other and generally working well together as a group. They have brought enthusiasm and a positive attitude to the first few weeks of schools. Routine and expectations are being established and I look forward to a challenging and rewarding year.

This year I will encourage children to take responsibility for their own learning, be happy to take risks and enjoy sharing their ideas. I will encourage them to develop independence, responsibility and to resolve conflicts assertively and fairly. Having fun, developing friendships and social confidence will also be important.

I look forward to seeing you all tonight.

Kind regards, Katina.
